Renew Your Mind

Romans 12:1-8

2) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and perfect will of God.

In studying this passage of scripture the first thing that pops out to me is the importance of our minds.

It seems that so much attention has been given to our human spirit (the inner man). I want it to be abundantly clear that keeping our spirits built up is important. However, our minds are not just left over matter from the creation of man’s spirit.

A quick glance at I Thessalonians 5:23 reveal that we are spirit, soul, and body. Most people are highly aware of their bodies because we have to deal with it every day. So much advertising dollars are spent to appeal to our bodies that it dominates our thinking by default. We have to bathe this body every day are else it will alert others of our lack of care. We have to feed this body regularly less if fail to produce energy for us. Our states have laws that prevent us from going out without properly being clothes. Therefore our bodies are at the forefront of our thinking because of these and other reasons not mentioned.

Many Christians find out through regular church attendance that we have spirits and they need to be feed. We have begun to feed our spirits and neglect our bodies as Christians. It appears that most people are either body conscience or spirit conscience. It is certain that our spirits commune with Holy Spirit, but it does not stop there.

We must feed our total being as mention in I Thessalonians 5:23 (spirit, soul, and body). The word of God is actually a book that addresses our total being. It will train our minds to think like God and feed our spirits. The bible teaches us what we should eat and the things we are to stay away from.

I want to focus on our mind because I believe out of the three it is the least developed. Yet according to our text not renewing our minds halts our transformation. We can’t step into the things that God has for us with our old way of thinking.

The bible teaches us that we are a new creation (a species of beings that never existed before) and we are in a new kingdom. Because of all the wonderful things that took place when we became Christians, we must be educated on how all of this work. Too many are trying to operate in a new environment with the same all rules they lived by before becoming a child of God.

In order for us to make this adjustment we must meditate on the word of God day and night. We must allow God’s thought to dominate our minds. His thoughts need to become our thoughts. We are to train our minds to think God thoughts. Our minds are educated by our spirit that gets its illumination from the Holy Spirit. Our minds are not renewed just because we heard new information, but we must become one with this new information.

When we do this our lives will be transformed and people will see Christ in us.
